Graffiti that Changes with Time
Little different than what I normally post on here but an art project I was working on!
Sooooo I really like art. And I like the idea of meaningful contradictions.
While I was trying to think this through, I was theorizing a graffiti piece that changes as time goes on, so each person that sees it has a different experience or interaction. I was originally thinking how to do it using layers of paint, so when there is normal degradation of the outer layer we would see the underneath.
This might still be something I explore in the future. But because I wanted something that had more rapid progression for the next while I decided upon the following.
I ended up calling my project: the Transient Graffiti Project. I got spray paint and spray painted this QR code places that people around the city had agreed to let me paint (fences, sidewalks, front yards) in a combination of spray paint and chalk paint depending on the legality of the location.
I then put together a website and took a combination of photos of graffiti and some local artists work that I wanted to promote. I programmed my website to on each scan iterate through and show a different photo and artist from the collection I put together and link to their social media handles. I thought this was a cool way to bridge the physical world with the technical world, giving me the ability to showcase and promote work from local artists. Some of the graffiti pieces on the website, with each scan degrade over time or change and add initials and words to the image.
Its a super basic website, but for the purpose of what I was trying to accomplish, it works. Here it is if you wanted to take a look: website. You can refresh the page to see some of the other work I am promoting here. Mainly San Francisco based oil and watercolors. But some other mediums too.
What excites me about this project is less that this is just made and done, but more so I can now use this as an MVP to build out a better platform that I can use some of this same marketing for to promote local art+stuff I believe in. If there is anyone reading this that would like to have some of their work featured here please let me know. But now, I can continue to spray paint or even just put the QR code on some stickers at coffee shops around town. This to be said that, I think its a cool stepping stone project?
Some other featured work:
If you want to see more of my art content I have an instagram that I just post art stuff on: macksartstuff. But I think I will continue to post some here as it comes up.
Thanks for reading. :)
